Playdoh is a French collective of six musicians and a video artist.
After some noisy demo tapes , they released their first album in 2000, playdoh, a milestone in French post-rock. While clearly influenced by Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead and Slint, they already add some electronic sounds to their post-rock hypnotic melodies, thus creating their very own sound.
Their second album (and last to date) Fragments, in 2003, is more influenced by Boards of Canada or minimal german electro (label Kompakt). The tracks are shorter, the songs are deconstructed: the whole album sounds very similar to a soundtrack or a "soundscape".
For legal reasons, the band had to be renamed "The cars are the stars", or short "TCATS", on the american market when their second album was distributed there. The cars are the stars is the name of one of the epic tracks (13 minutes) of their first album.
